RUNNING FOR PEACE
ISIOLO PEACE MARATHON

The Isiolo Peace Run is a peacebuilding initiative that uses the spirit of running to promote dialogue, reconciliation, and understanding among communities affected by inter-ethnic conflict in Isiolo and neighboring counties.

About Isiolo Peace Run

The Isiolo Peace Run is an annual half marathon that brings together warring communities in eastern Kenya to promote peace, dialogue, and reconciliation. Organized by the Regional Pastoralist Peace Link (RPPL), the event involves runners from different ethnic groups participating in races like the 10km and 21km. The half marathon aims to build tolerance and peaceful coexistence, with initiatives like community-police open days and alternative dispute resolution also supported alongside the race.

OBJECTIVES

The main objective of the Isiolo Peace Run is to foster lasting peace and reconciliation among communities in conflict across Isiolo and neighboring counties. By engaging morans (young warriors) from traditionally feuding groups, the event seeks to transform hostility into harmony through the unifying power of sports. Beyond the marathon, it promotes dialogue, tolerance, and cooperation between ethnic communities, while strengthening relationships between civilians and security agencies through community-police open days and peace forums. The initiative also aims to empower young people by nurturing their athletic talent, creating economic opportunities, and encouraging them to become ambassadors of peace and positive change in their communities.

IMPACT OF ISIOLO PEACE MARATHON

The Isiolo Peace Marathon has become a powerful symbol of unity, hope, and transformation across northern Kenya. The annual event uses the universal language of sports to promote peace, reconciliation, and social cohesion among pastoralist communities often affected by conflict. Through inclusive participation of morans, women, youth, and security agencies, the marathon provides a neutral space for dialogue, teamwork, and trust-building. It has strengthened relationships between warring groups, encouraged cooperation with law enforcement, and inspired young people to become peace ambassadors in their villages. Beyond running, the Isiolo Peace Marathon creates economic opportunities for local vendors, supports environmental conservation through tree planting, and raises national awareness on peaceful coexistence.
